Perhaps that’s why I was confused (was? still am).

While decreed heretical, and were destroyed by the Catholic Church during the Albigensian Crusade, I was under the impression that they were indeed a branch of Christianity, albeit, with a dualistic god concept.

I look forward to that diagram. Please send me a link when it's done.

thanks,
HumpDromedary Humphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14165566701791663057noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4906915461562933007.post-27936516120722173362009-12-29T00:40:31.992-05:002009-12-29T00:40:31.992-05:00No. We loath the god of the Old Testament just as ...No. We loath the god of the Old Testament just as much as we loath the one from the New. He is a psychopath.

It's all been so twisted that hardly any of the original intent remains. Maybe, and that's being real generous, maybe 5% of the original gnostic texts stayed intact through Irenaeus' redacting madness while compiling the books he wanted included in the dogmatic Bible. He edited the rest out. And wrote Against Heresies about the ones he burned.

Gnosticism is a difficult concept for ANYone, Hump. It is literally layers upon layers of understanding. You can't just read books on it and claim to "get it." That's the frustrating part. Gnostics tend to lean more toward the... poetry... side of writing style(there is a reason for this) and this makes for a great deal of confusion until you do some studying on terminology. It's hard at first. Concepts of literalistic Christianity you are accustomed to are LITERALLY turned on their head.

And don't worry about all your oop's. We're both learning. I'd always assumed that all atheists were hardcore life haters. (oops) I've discovered atheists are practical and rational people who simply don't like bullshit. *shrug* Who knew? Not me. Now I do.

I'm going to write a Break It Down For Me article tomorrow. Hopefully with diagrams. With COLOR! (no, that wasn't sarcasm. I'm really hoping to be able to do this elegantly as possible because variations in color will help.) We'll see if I can manage to do it.

It'll end up looking like a big onion if I can fiddle around with my photoshop program right..

The doctrinal text of gnosticism? Everything from the Manichean, Mandaean, Sethian, Valentinian collections, Naassene's, Hermetic, Cathar, and even some Islamic Mystical texts. (Most of those you've no doubt never heard of because they were killed. But some of their works survived.) And naturally the Nag Hammadi scrolls. Gnosticism is so widely spread out through the ages and across different lands but there are common threads at the heart.

By the way, I just learned today that Timothy Freke and his co-author wrote a book which should be out soon called The Gospel of the Second Coming which is supposed to be HILAROUS! The premise is that Jesus comes back to earth and has quite a bit to say about all the stupid(and vile) things which have been done in His name since the crucifixion. I can't wait to read it. It sounds like a riot. And of course Literalists will be up in arms. Oh what fun!Angelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10724264061719518367noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4906915461562933007.post-81330379805937045582009-12-28T21:04:03.964-05:002009-12-28T21:04:03.964-05:00Angel,

It sounds something like Deism, but I detect more levels (personages) of superntauralism than Deism.

I had always assumed (oops) that there were "Gnostic Christians" who perceived Jesus as a man, not a God, and I had assumed (oops again) that they worshipped the God of the Old testament.

I've got lots to learn

What is the doctrinal text of Gnosticism?

HumpDromedary Humphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14165566701791663057noreply@blogger.com
