Miracle Mug!!

There are only a handful of Saving Grace episodes left and then the show is gone forever. I'm tearing up just thinking about it. This is definitely going to be a series I buy in the disk set format.

Last weeks episode, which I just got the chance to sit down today and watch taped on my DVR, concerned three different topics.
  1. Neely moved into the house next door and Earl is desperately trying to get her to stay off meth. Detox with an angel bitching at your side. Sucks to be Neely!
  2. A musician's girlfriend was murdered and that case needed to be solved.
  3. Earl(the angel) shows Grace how much God is impressed with how she handles a difficult situation that day by redecorating her bathroom with Chinese lamps, candles, and flowers. Guess God realized that Grace needed a bit of r.e.l.a.x.a.t.i.o.n. And hey, why not? When she does good she does really really good. God is playing games with Grace concerning a dog she keeps seeing everywhere. And I mean EVERYwhere! First time he shows up is in her bathroom right after she thanks Earl for the makeover. Grace, weirdo that she is, leans down to the dog and grabs his tongue. Dog just sits there and looks at her. Because of the dog's calm demeanor with being grabbed, Grace knows that this isn't an ordinary dog. When she looks back at him he's disappeared, slobbery tongue and all.
The next day at work she sees him sitting on the side of the road. Then on a milk carton. The mother of all endings(is it?) to this dog's tale is that his face winds up on Grace's tea mug. She's so freaked out that she drops it. It bounces. The tea mug bounces. Tea spills everywhere and the ceramic tea mug is intact.

All her co-workers are looking at her like she's had an epileptic seizure. Grace starts laughing and points at the mug. "Hey, watch this!" She picks up the mug and slams it down toward the floor. It bounces again. "Miracle mug!" she announces and everyone starts laughing. They're all used to the wacked out heavenly interventions in her life. Grace and a co-worker dash after the doggy mug and pile up in a doorway on top of each other playing.

Only two(?) episodes ago Grace jumped off a building and didn't break a bone when it should have killed her. The clothes she wore to the hospital wound up on eBay being auctioned off as holy relics.

While Hollywood has a wide variety of visions concerning religion, I believe this playfulness is one they got right. I mean, come on. What's not to laugh about here? A stalker angel dog? An unbreakable cup? Holy eBay panties?! Grace's sense of humor is in the right place. Why not laugh about the truly absurd? And if it's God who's doing the intervening then obviously He's got a sense of humor.

Thunder - Introduction & Evolution

Thunder is a one of the most perplexing gnostic texts and worth its weight in gold. A worthy read and an even more worthy collection of verses to meditate on. Because its verses contain such contradictory descriptions(sometimes in the same line!) it is necessary to nibble on it instead of trying to digest it in one sitting. It really will give you a splitting headache. I've been 'nibbling' at it for a few months now and finally have a grasp of most of the broad concepts explored therein.

Among Nag Hammadi experts it is most commonly thought that Sophia herself speaks through the voice of an author(unknown) to create a powerful but complicated feminine persona who traverses a thousand years of ancient literary equivalents. There are parallels in Thunder's literary styles with Sanskrit, Egyptian, and Jewish literature devices and forms. Thunder as a historical religious text and Sophia's mystery aren't that mysterious when taken into those contexts, then. The poetic form is timeless.

A few related verses from Thunder has fired my imagination to blog today. In no particular order:

"I am silence incomprehensible
and an idea remembered often."

"I am the utterance of my name."

"I am hearing for all,
and my speech is indeciperable.
I am an unspeaking mute
and enormous in my many words."

"Those unconnected to me are unfamiliar with me,
and those in my substance know me.
Those close to me are ignorant of me,
and those far away have known me.
On the day I am close to you, you are far,
and on the day I am far, I am close to you."

"Hear me, hearers,
and find out about my words, you who know me.
I am the hearing all can reach;
I am speech undecipherable.
I am the name of the sound
and the sound of the name.
I am the sign of the letter
and the designation of the division."

also

"Come to childhood and don't despise it, because it is small and tiny."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The last line seems to be the icing on the cake, for me anyway. The punctuation at the end of a sentence. A gentle hug after a good long cry. Because you know we all royally pissed off our parents during childhood. It's not easy being a parent. It's hard to know whether to let your child suffer for a bit in order to learn or to help them right up after a fall.
And along the lines of Night Reflection's post concerning FEELING and recognizing that divine connection to God in our lives, how can we write about these conversations with the All? At times I am so stumped for words I cannot even think of where to begin. This is why having eloquent verses like Thunder available in print is so vitally important for those of us who strive to learn and feel more than what is available for common consumption on CNN and MSN.com with our cup of coffee.
In my own struggle to come up with an adequate description of what this divine connection and communion feels... I feel inept and not up to the task. My conclusion is that this is because I am such a visual person. And my relationship with Pleroma seems to be one of fewer words and more emotional surges. There's only so many words in a thesaurus to describe warm, fuzzy, loving, adoring, universal, all encompassing, endlessly compassionate, endlessly forgiving...
And I have arrived at a solution while writing out that paragraph. In one word. My search has ended.
Endless.
Now of course I can come up with a dozen more synonyms for that. Boundless. Eternal. Infinite. Unceasing. Etc.
But endless seems to cover it.
Like an endlessly overflowing cup of joy. When I was a child I recognized this. Instinctively. And it was terrifying! I didn't know what this visualization was(cup of overflowing substance) or what it represented. I had nothing to hang onto. There was no edge to that cup. It was just me in my little bitty body floundering in that emotion. All I knew was that I felt too much, knew too little, and had no one to help me with such a thing.
It took me another twenty years of living to discover what it was. Him. Her. Them. The All. Everything!
Picture a continually overflowing cup. Our very analytical human minds will constantly try to grasp at ideas of where the substance is being sourced from. But here's the answer to the riddle: there is no Place where it resides. There is no Beginning to find. It simply is. And that is what we find so unfathomable. And outrageous in our narrow human view, therefore we make up and even accept the most absurd allegorical stories to be fact to stop us from being faced with that endlessness. It terrifies us. Deep down, it terrifies us. We don't see an edge to that great big swimming pool. There are no life rafts for us to grab onto.
Occam's razor isn't just a mathematical term. And we shouldn't believe myths to be facts simply because it's easier to bear. We cannot evolve as truly responsible adults in the eyes of the All if we shackle ourselves to these literal interpretations. By releasing our bonds we are letting go of the edge we have superficially created and float free in His substance; content and liberated in our spiritual growth. Endlessness doesn't make us tremble anymore. We dive into that tranquil sea and don't touch bottom.
Teaching Children Gnosis?
Oy vey. I had a truly mind blowing moment today.
Long story short(describing incidents spanning over five hours) my oldest stepson tried to shove silly putty down his younger brother's throat and this younger brother sprayed his silly putty wielding brother in the face with extra strength ammonia Windex.
That was the straw that broke the camel's back. I'd had it with the non-stop bickering and whining over everything imaginable. They were having a truly Bad Day.
Now eight and ten year olds don't always make the wisest of decisions. I know this. But I really felt the need to teach them the seriousness of what they tried to do. The youngest boy could have choked to death and the oldest could have had damage to his eyes and needed hospitalization.
My knee-jerk reaction after five hours of their tantrums? "Keep it up and I'll make you write two pages front and back of the Ten Commandments!"
*slaps self* What was I thinking?!
Why would I want those two precious kids to be indoctrinated any more than they already are by other well meaning family members during Summer Vacation and other Holidays? After shaking my head a few times at my outlandish statement to the boys I resolved to combine the most meaningful aspects of those Commandments into one statement and yes, the boys wrote two pages front and back. I meant business and was tired of their behavior.
The one sentence I had them write was: "Family members honor, protect, and teach one another."
Afterward, my ten year old thanked me for teaching him a lesson, apologized, and hugged me.
Go on. Do that double take. You know you want to. Read the sentence again. It's true. He actually thanked me for explaining just how dangerous his actions were and letting the punishment for it revolve around honoring, protecting, and teaching one another instead of just spanking him and his brother. The above sentence directly contrasts what his actions were, ergo, he sees just how wrong he was. Is he going to do something similar in the future? Absolutely. And we'll talk about it all over again. Such is childhood.
Is outright teaching gnosis to children advisable? Not really. It can't be taught in your stereotypical Sunday School fashion. The basic outline of the gnostic vision of our world and universe is tricky to teach when mainstream religion dominates the family outside your own home. I haven't been able to do it successfully for this reason. They look at me like I have two heads and regurgitate what is crammed in their heads by their birth-mother. One thing I have to give her credit for- she really teaches with consistency. Hellfire this and damnation that. (And have her "lessons" changed their behavior? No. If anything it has gotten ten times worse. When they come home from visits with her we have to break the kids back in to recognizing the house rules and to act like human beings again instead of animals. The longer they're with her the longer this process takes. Turns the house upside down for a month.)
The last resort is, of course, to teach by example. Let life be a child's own professor. Problems come up every day which are wonderful opportunities for us as parents! Gently guide them to see other options and solutions, not just the easiest one. While you are building additional flexibility in your child's mind by doing these exercises you are, in fact, giving them room to grow and come to gnosis when they are ready as adults and on their own terms.
Managing Stress, Part 2 - Dolphins!
Click Play and sit back. Turn up your volume.
Can you feel your shoulders relax yet?
By the end of this video I had a goofy grin on my face. Couldn't help it. Dolphins are such amazingly intelligent animals and to see one of them so happily PLAY with something as simple as a bubble ring is soothing.
Looking at the video several times what I can deduce so far is that the dolphin spits out a bit of hair through their mouth and then uses their blowhole to push a hole through the center of that bubble, making it separate into a very thin doughnut-like shape. Toward the end of the vid, when you watch the cluster of three dolphins around the bubble ring you'll notice that the one who blew it is slowly turning over onto their back and then glides through the center. That dolphin is truly enjoying him/herself!
I think when the bubble pops it tickles their sensitive skin.
Why can't most humans be this happy without resorting to buying This and That and Every Other Thing in the store which appeals to them? Heck, my two cats get more enjoyment out of a trash cardboard box than any store-bought toys I try to entice them with.
Managing Stress
Last night I dreamt I was talking to a therapist. This therapist alternated between asking me questions that a literalist Christian and a gnostic cleric would. Quite confusing for the patient! I answered honestly and with no reservations.
The ending epiphany was that although I went in to talk about managing stress I left(woke up) to discover that it was really my own choice in having that stress and some of the bodily pain which resulted from it.
The literalist asked me why I didn't call out to God to ease my pain and to take the burdens off my heart. I replied that I don't really think that's in his job description. I made every decision in my life which led up to where I am now. Why should he bail me out? I can't do that myself?
The gnostic cleric asked if I felt like an infatuated infant or an adolescent in my relationship with the All.
I replied that I don't need to be given a bottle anymore and don't feel the urge to run back to him the very instant things get rough so... an adolescent.
Does the comfort I receive from the All feel different now than in the beginning, the gnostic asked?
Yes. Does that bother me? No. In the beginning it was an all encompassing warmth, like honey seeping down between the joints of your bones, type of relief. Now it's a gentle pat on the shoulder and a kiss on the cheek. I don't feel the need for more.
When I feel frustrated with my husband/kids/family and want to lock myself in the closet and scream(and I do sometimes!) I do give in to tears. Crying does relieve the body of stress. And then I have to ask myself after this tidal wave of emotion leaves once again: why do I feel this stress? Why do I feel this angry? My conclusion has remained the same time and time again- I cannot control other people. But that means that I also should not feel badly for their rotten decisions or ignorant behavior.
This is harder than it sounds. My mantra lately has been, "Detach. Let them make their own mistakes. Back off." And this even goes for my husband. Just because you can do something for someone doesn't mean that you should. I can't fix everyone's boo-boos and I can't anticipate everyone's needs or desires. It's not my place to. If people don't fall they can't learn to get back up on their own.
I'm finding that letting go feels good. Sure the house is messier than it was before. Yes, the kid's homework isn't always done to perfection and their grades are falling. But letting someone realize how much more they are capable of doing on their own instead of being prodded along like a child is a priceless gift.
Sometimes doing less means getting more positive results for and from people you love.
"Legion" Movie Review
Watching this movie last evening left me feeling a bit dazed. Boredom in the first half hour was soon replaced by picking my chin up off the floor and then laughing like a hyena. I couldn't help it. It was ridiculous.
In "Legion" we see literalist Christianity at it's very best: the premise that Jehovah has lost His faith in humanity and thus sends all his angels to Earth in order to exterminate us. The archangel Michael chops off his own wings, falls to Earth, and then tries to save us-- with machine guns! Gabriel is Jehovah's right hand of doom and sets out to follow God's orders. Oh and wait! There's an eight month pregnant woman who's child supposedly saves humanity simply by being born?
The loopholes in this plot are astounding. The rationalization is comical. So because Mommy agreed not to abort the baby said baby's birth somehow negates God's anger? Baby's birth "rewrites" history or some other such nonsense. How is it that God can't control some pesky sperm from fertilizing an egg, that's what I want to know. Isn't He this omniscient deity we've been told about in Sunday school? What happened to all His mystical, magical powers?
The first clue that something isn't quite right: A little old lady walks into a diner, sits down to eat a bloody(medium-rare my ass! This meat is bleeding like the Ganges after an Indian massacre.) steak and says to her pregnant waitress, "But honey, your baby is going to burn." Turns out this seemingly demonic granny with pointy teeth who crawls on the ceiling isn't so demonic after all. She's an ANGEL!! This is where the gnostic sadly lowers his/her head into their palm and sighs at the crazed imagination of Hollywood directors and producers.
The only part in this entire movie which was intellectually stimulating, or remotely redeeming, occurred at the very end right before Michael beats down Gabriel for the last time. Michael was supposedly killed already by Gabriel so imagine old Gabe's surprise when Mikey shows back up to save the day. Michael's response? "You gave Him what He wanted. I gave Him what He needed."
Hmm... now that did make me pause.
Long story short the demiurge threw a temper tantrum because humanity just couldn't play by His rules, He tries to exterminate us, and one of His own angels(Michael) has to teach Him that humanity is worth saving. What, is He still a toddler in need of a time out in the corner? Because that is exactly the rationalization the writers of this movie attempt to portray here: God is a spiteful and egotistical bastard who gives up on us when we decide we want to play by different rules. Toys break so you throw them out. Makes sense, yeah? To a THREE YEAR OLD!
Why are we worth saving? Because we love and are kind to each other even when we don't have a real reason to, even when there is nothing going right in our lives and we feel hopeless. We still love and have the capacity to love.
On Death, Grief, and Selfishness
We had a death in the family last week. On the day I found out about it I cried. The next day my tears wouldn't come and I had no answer as to why this was.
I loved this person. I still do. I miss them and I always will. This is what the emotional part of my mind keeps chanting. But there is something else I've discovered that lies under that thick layer of grief: joy.
Why?
And what is this joy?
Why do I feel this joy?
Where did my tears wander off to on that second day? Are my tear ducts malfunctioning?
Why am I not sad anymore?
I have grieved over loss in my past. This entire experience doesn't feel like the 'grief' I have known in the past, however. This feels different and I only discovered why when I let the rational part of my soul surface and allow me to pick apart every aspect of what I was feeling in a non-judgmental way. This distinction is important if we are to make real progress in finding gnosis. NON-judgmental rational thought. It can be scarier than heck because we're socially conditioned to categorize everything into Good, Bad, and Leave-The-Gray-Area-Alone.
That gray area is where gnosis exists. We have to learn to think outside the box that is this material world.
What I have concluded in my search for answers on this topic is that psychologists' definition of grief is backward in relation to gnosis. They believe and teach others that grief happens in stages. This I cannot really argue with. Our emotions do evolve. But dissecting the fundamental judgment they make about the cause of sadness in grief is dependent on one concept only-- that the sadness is based on a feeling of losing a loved one. The survivors are left behind with too many questions and these will supposedly never be answered. Dig deeper and you'll find an atheist component to this psychological argument. If you believe in heaven are you really losing someone or only have a brief period of time before you do see them again? So who's losing what here?
Psychologists cling to this loss rationale and never dig deeper.
I dare. I'll do it now.
Grief is selfish. It serves no purpose. Why do I say this? Because when you examine the very nature of "losing someone to death" you find that it is wrapped up in the survivor's experience. Not the one who died. It's all about what the survivor supposedly lost.
"I miss him/her!"
"I'll never see them again."
"I feel so lost without them."
"What am I going to do without them?"
Do these thoughts sound familiar?
Let me put this in another light. Suicide. Psychologists(and curiously enough, most religous clergy) teach the world that to commit suicide is the epitome of selfishness. Why? Again, because the survivor would miss out on the loving company of the one who wants to kill him/herself.
What exactly is selfish about realizing how hard and unforgiving and hellish this world is? What sane person wouldn't want out?! The answer is the person who is hylic/somatic. Worldly. Materialistic. Unable to see the forest for the trees. Cannot see the eternal nature that is our soul and our divine parent, Pleroma.
Am I advocating suicide? No. But I am advocating truth and the concept of the Bodhisattva, that is an enlightened person staying to teach instead of going back to Pleroma as they crave.
A Bodhisattva has the choice to stay or go. A person who is hit by a car doesn't. But as survivors we have a choice in how we react to OUR loss. Our jealous loss. We have a choice of either accepting that we will not see that person in their worldly body again until WE die and then move on -- or we can wallow in selfish grief.
Somebody's running for the office of God...
Gnostics and atheists have one thing in common: appreciation for comedy. And lack of reverence for the deity who created our material world because we see plainly just how jacked up it is. We hold Him accountable for His mistakes- we don't worship him because of it or make grand assumptions that There Is A Deeper Purpose behind those mistakes, because we know there's not.
When I read the latest blog post of my favorite atheist I knew(blog author Dromedary Hump) I had to share it with you. Keep the convoluted laws of the Old Testament in mind as you read.
*********************************************
Over coffee this morning I was thinking that I have all the necessary qualifications to establish my own godliness, even have people pray to me and worship me. So I have been pulling my resume together. Here’s what I have so far:
June 2007: My eldest son and his wife disobeyed me when I told them not to touch the bowl of dried banana chips. I threw them out of the house and told them they are cursed for life. They didn’t take it well.
September 2007: I decided I didn’t like the way things were going in my town. I blew up the damn which flooded the entire region killing every man, woman, child and animal in the county except for my friend Gary, his wife and child and their three Boston Terriers. They’re the only folks I liked.
January 2008: I convinced this “mentally challenged” guy that unless he killed his own son with an axe that I was going to heap some bad mojo on him. He was just about to lower the boom on the kid, when I stopped him at the last second. I was just testing him. He may have soiled his pants, I know his kid did. It was a hoot.
March 2008: My followers and friends needed some rules, so I came up with my "Top Ten List of Stuff Hump Wants You to Do.” I made sure the first four rules were all about me. Hey, I have a fragile ego.
May 2008 - August 2008: Lots of little things were pissing me off during this period. Maybe it was the heat, maybe I was just cranky, I dunno. Things like folks wearing their damn polyester/cotton blend clothes; people eating lobster with butter and lemon; farmers cross breeding cattle to get more milk production; men giving other men hand jobs, same with women; lots of other stuff like that that had no rhyme or reason … hundreds of them. So I decided those things are illegal around here. I’ve directed my followers to kill those who do the stuff that really irks me. No Damn Gleaning Fields on Thursdays During Baseball Season if you value your life, damn it!!!
November 2008: This big extended family down the road didn’t think much of me and my followers. They practiced some strange ways, ya know? I think they are Asians. Probably pagans. Some of them actually ate lobster salad with mayo on hot dog buns! Disgusting!!
So I told my friends and followers to set their house on fire and kill every one of them; their dogs, cats and farm animals too! I told them it’s ok to make an exception for the little girls. Hey, my friends like ‘em young. I tried to get my friends to wipe out the Town of Bellows Falls, Vermont too, but the town’s two cops had those aluminum meter maid electric carts, so they were too powerful for us.
March 2009: I decided to have another son. Mrs. Hump became hysterical at the idea and threatened me with a knife. I had no idea how to find myself a wife of child bearing age on short notice -- and my inflatable Mary doll wasn’t in any position to reproduce. So I snuck up on some stoner chick, gave her some Ruffies and nailed her. She never knew what happened. Late in December she gave birth to our son. She figured it was a virgin birth. Hey… I wasn’t about to confess to anything, so I let her think that.
January 2010: I was thinking my young bastard son is gay. I wasn’t sure, but he was spending all his free time with this group of a dozen or so effeminate guys with long hair and playing his X-Box. (I’ll admit he has remarkable control of that thing for a 13 month old, damn miraculous!)
So to make him prove his manhood I told him to get himself all worked up and pissed off, and inject some neighbor’s goats with anti-freeze and have them jump off a cliff. He did and they did. Then, to have him prove he’s no pantie waist tree hugger, I told him to kill a pear tree for not having pears on them. He babbled something at first about my being an idiot because there are no pear baring trees in January in New Hampshire. But he killed the tree anyway. He’s a good boy, bit of a smart ass and given to hissy fits though.
Spring 2010: I plan to have my little bastard son tortured to death, to show what a compassionate and caring guy I am to my followers. No doubt he’ll get a little rattled toward the end, but he’s a skinny kid and probably won’t last too long… three or four hours, max. He’s resilient though so who knows -- some defibrillator shocks and he might come back. “CLEAR!!”
Here are a few of the funny comments to the blog post so far.
Dear God. Hump is goin' to hell. The End. Let the outrage begin!
P.S. What is wrong with butter and lemon with lobster? Have I been doing it wrong all these years?
Dannette,
Gasp!!!
Deuteronomy 14:9-10 says:
These ye shall eat of all that are in the waters: all that have fins and scales shall ye eat:
And whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye may not eat; it is unclean unto you.
Thus, god hates crabs, lobsters, shrimp, clams, etc. Lemon good, Butter good, shell fish.. ABOMMINATION UNTO THE LARD!!!
Now go, my child and sin no more.
Hump,
For one, if you want to be my new god, you're going to have to come up with some pretty good circular argumentation. Secondly, what kind of afterlife benefits do you have?
Here's what I'm looking for in a deity. You're going to have to beat beer volcanoes and a stripper factory just to outdo the FSM, and let me tell you 72 camel toes won't cut it. Also, you're gonna need some chosen people. If I happen to be one of those chosen ones I might consider it (I love feeling better than everyone else).
You might also have to convince me that you have healed my diabetes, and a new guitar would really sweeten the deal, but maybe I am pushing it a little.
zar
p.s. what happens if I say Drome Dammit(!) ?
said...
Holy Mother of ME, Zar!!! ..
You sure make alot of demands.
I'm not even ready to launch my campaign and already you're nailing my hump to the wall.
Remember, once made God, I get that 100 day honeymoon period to get my act together.
Dannette said...
Why did the lard make shellfish if he hates them? I can get why the lard would be into butter, though. I'm all confoozled again.
said...
Hey, why'd he make pigs if he hates them? There's no accounting for the crazy stuff the ancients decided their god hates.
I mean, their god hates people wearing cotton and flax blend garments. What's up with that? Is he worried about the dry cleaning bills?
NewEnglandBob said...
"Remember, once made God, I get that 100 day honeymoon period to get my act together."
Wait-a-hump-damn-minute! 100 days - are those the millennial long days each? Or are the epochal days? Ya know, we ain't gonna wait 'round no 2 billion years while you vacation.
said...
Mixter,
Thanks. You may be Disciple material :)
NEBob...
you and Zar are putting too much pressure on me. I was planning to ease into the deity thing.
As a Camelian Biblical Literalist, the 100 days are of the 24 hour variety. None of that liberal theist "100 days = 2 billion years" crappola for me.
Tracey said...
Amateur. You haven't done that 10 plagues thing yet. And if you want to be my chosen deity, what's in it for me. FSM has a stripper factory, which is alright for dudes and lesbians, but what about us hetero females? What's in it for us? Do I get an endless supply of the Old Spice dude? Eat bonbons and drink cokes all day and still maintain a smokin' hot bod? Seriously. You've only appealed to my sense of fear thus far. What's in it for my sense of greed?
In danger is thee who angers The Hump!
How dare one question his Humpness or make demands thereof.
Do ye knoweth not that the Hump works in mysterious ways?
You shall receive that which is right in the Humps eyes.
The Hump is all knowing! The hump reviseth his soul contracts as he wishes. Again, how dare you question!
The Hump knows that which is right for thee.
You are all in danger of eternal damnation, suffering the never ending line of Starbucks! Forever and ever, even for ever and ever.
BTW: Lord Hump,
As things go wrong for people, not understanding your infinite wisdom, they will become angry with you when they do not approve of your proscribed outcome to their prayer request. This could lead to a drop in your overall approval rating.
Might I suggest you play the game of good supernatural being / bad supernatural being. Create a new cabinet position and office. The office might be titled: "Sorry All Things Ain't Nice" or SATAN for short. To this office you divert blame when people get pissy about your divine plan.
That's all for now...I'll be back later
Yamantaka/gnosis?
I have a question for my readers: Does this description of 'the enlightening activity of wisdom' sound like gnosis to you?
How does Yamāntaka terminate death?
Directly from Wikipedia.org-- "This question depends upon the meaning ascribed to the term death – but one way in which this ability can be identified is through the enlightening activity of wisdom. The wisdom mind is able to perceive that death has no intrinsic, concrete existence: our understanding of death emerges solely from the conventions of the world. Also, when we achieve the same realisation of Yamantaka - who is a Buddha - then we have transcended death.
There are three types of death spoken of in the Yamāntaka Tantra : Outer death is the regular end of life, which is embodied by Yama, Lord of Death, who resides in the south, seven stories under the earth. The inner death is ignorance of the true nature of non-dual reality. Instinctive habitual grasping and aversion to objectively "real" objects and subjects arises from this ignorance. The secret death is dualistic appearance on the subtlest level of clear light mind and illusory body. With the practice of Yamāntaka one overcomes those types of death and gains immortality as a Buddha."
Orson Scott Card's "philotic twining" Theory
In Xenocide, the third science fiction book of the Ender's Game series by author Orson Scott Card, I was surprised to find the physics theory of philotic twining to have a gnostic slant. From Wikipedia, here is the best description I can find of the theory, in three distinct sections
Pay particular attention to the theory of 'ai
ùas.'My own notes and thoughts are at the end.
Philote
A philote is the basic building block of matter, the true indivisible particle that is not made up of smaller ones. Philotes take up no space and are essential to the theory of philotic energy. Each atom has a philote of its own, each molecule likewise, and ultimately each human has an aiùa, an intelligent philote. It is suggested that perhaps a single philote, which could be referred to as God, contains the essence of humanity, and/or all sentient species in the known universe.
Early in the series, philotic energy is used as a form of faster-than-light communication, in which messages are transmitted instantaneously via ansible. Later, it is used as a form of near-instantaneous travel, with items to be transported being sent Outside and then back In, arriving at the specified destination (which may be any distance from the origin).
Philotes combine or 'twine' to make up all matter in the universe. This twining also makes possible the ansibles, which allow instantaneous communication over any distance via quantum entanglement. Philotes have no mass or inertia, only location (similar to a geometric point), and extend infinitely in two directions. All philotes are qualitatively different from each other, in that some are 'smarter' than others. As one moves up the levels, from philotes to quarks to atoms to molecules and so on, the patterns in which the philotes twine become increasingly complex. Not all philotes are 'smart' enough to be able to control and maintain these patterns. It takes very 'smart' ones, which are called aiúas, to inhabit actual life forms, and an organism's 'master' philote, or its aiùaSanskrit for life), is considered to be the physical site of its soul. (
The Hive Queens of the Formic race are born like the rest of the Formics: unintelligent. The mother of the new queen calls a philote from another place, a non-place, and it comes. The Hive Queen also mentions that humans do the same thing when born. It's the act of becoming sentient. It is discovered that these philotes come from Outside, where there is no sense of location and all matter resides in one geometrical point (see above section for more detail).
In the study of philotics, philotes are essential threads of energy, which have no mass, and the measurable dimension of a mathematical point, which entwine or "twine" and create holons, which are then interpreted as solid sensory phenomena by sentient beings.
The theory of philotics
Philotes are the fundamental building blocks of all matter and energy. Philotes have neither mass, dimension, nor inertia. Philotes have only location, duration and connection. When philotes combine to make durable structures, protons, neutrons, atoms, molecules, organisms, planets, etc., they "twine up". Each philote connects itself to the rest of the universe along a single ray, a one-dimensional line that connects it to all other philotes in its nearest immediate structure.
All of those strands from philotes in that structure are twined into a single philotic thread that connects to the next largest structure. The threads twine into a yarn to the next largest structure, and then into a greater rope of larger structures. This has nothing to do with nuclear forces or gravity, nothing to do with chemical bonds. Philotes are beneath all observable manifestations of matter and energy.
The individual philotic rays are always there, present in the twines, going on apparently forever. The rays twine together to the planet, and each planet's philotic twine reaches to its star, and each star to the center of the galaxy — and who knows where after that.
The philotic twines from substances like rock or sand all connect directly from each molecule to the center of the planet. But when a molecule is incorporated into a sentient living organism, its ray shifts. Instead of reaching to the planet, it gets twined up into the individual cells, the rays from all the cells are all twined together so that each organism sends a single fiber of philotic connections to twine up with the central philotic rope of the planet.
When a twined structure is broken — as when a molecule breaks apart — the old philotic twining remains for a time. Fragments that are no longer physically connected remain philotically connected for a while. The smaller the particle the longer the connection lasts after the break up. The more complex the structure the faster it responds to change. After nuclear fission, theoretically, it takes hours for the philotic rays to sort themselves out again, perhaps not in an identical manner. The energy released in fission may result from the breaking of philotic twines.
At one point, Jane hints that she is responsible for the ansibles's safety. The philotic rays themselves have never broken, only the machinery, but shouldn't they have, after at least 3000 years? She says she keeps them entwined, using her power being a sentient being that lives in the ansibles's connections.
Philotic Web
The Philotic Web is a philosophical and metaphysical construct of the Ender's Game series of books by Orson Scott Card. The philosophy of philotes and the philotic web they create first appeared in Xenocide, the third book of the series. It describes the interconnection of not only all the aiuas in the universe, but also the lesser-intelligent philotes. The "web" itself is used by Jane to access not only the combined knowledge of humanity, but also as a pseudo-storage device to house her memory and higher reasoning functions.
The web is the direct result of every philotic connection in the universe. These connections never touch each other in the truer sense of the word "web," but every being can be linked to every other being by their interconnected philotes. These philotic connections are not static, and can be strengthened or weakened over time. For example, Si Wang-Mu and Peter Wiggin begin their journey together having only a small philotic connection. As they spend more time together and grow increasingly more affectionate and emotionally attached to each other, their connection grows stronger and stronger.
The philotic connections spoken of in the Enderverse can grow to monumental proportions based solely on emotional and "spiritual" connectedness. Grego is spoken of as having formed a very intense philotic web with the angry mob in Xenocide in a matter of minutes. Additionally, philotic connections can cause physical disturbance or emotional distress when severed.
It is also important to note that philotic connections exist between living and non-living things alike.
The very last sentence strikes me deeply in the sense that we are all very materialistic creatures. Our wants. Our things-we-think-we-need but in essence can do perfectly fine without. If this philotic twining of ours with material items comes to be too important to us then WHO are we so strongly connected with? No one. And nothing except our own greed for more 'things' to surround ourselves with to distract us from how hollow our lives are without more meaning.
